Suicide Facts and Risks

Every 13 minutes in the United States marks another death caused by suicide. Twice as likely as homicide, suicide is our 10th leading cause of death. In America, suicide accounts for nearly 45,000 deaths per year. In Ohio, suicide rates have increased by 36% from 1999 to 2016! For the teen population, the numbers are more drastic. On average, one in five high school students seriously consider suicide and 10% of students actually attempt suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Ohio teens after accidents. In fact, between August 2017 and January 2018, six students in the Perry Ohio school district, committed suicide. However, a silver lining to be found in all of this is that four out of five teens who attempt suicide give clear warnings.  Depression that is untreated, undiagnosed, or   ineffectively treated is the # 1 cause of suicide. For individuals suffering with depression, 80% who are treated for their illness respond favorably to treatment. Be aware of the risk factors for suicide.
