Ordinance 1932-42 was passed on December 5, 1932 providing for "the employment of certain volunteer firemen" compensated for services at a rate of $.60 per hour. The old photograph shown was taken of Pepper Pikes 1st Village truck in 1940. Posing in the photo outside the "fire station" are crew (from left to right) Bob Mason, Ralph Meteling, William Gorris, Ed Lodge, Ray Shima, Roger Faragher, Bill Eirman and Sterling Colert. Mr. Faragher became the 1st Fire Chief, Mr. Ray Shima and Mr. Bill Gorris also went on to become Fire Chiefs of the department. In June of 1944 a provision was made for "the creation of a fire department for the Village of Pepper Pike" no compensation rendered. In 1955, an amendment was passed allowing for compensation at a rate of $1.60 per hour. August 21, 1974 is the official Birthday of today's full-time fire department. The fire station building was complete and dedicated in 1975.
Chief Tom Hartman leads today's full time department. Staffing includes three Lieutenants, nine Firefighter/Paramedics and one Administrative Assistant. The department also employs one Arson Dog named Dakota. The part-time members fill weekend shifts and respond when manpower is needed at the station. The part-time roster is comprised of four Lieutenants and thirteen Firefighters/ Paramedics and E.M.T.'s.
The department responded to 804 calls for assistance in 2004. In addition to responding to calls for assistance, members participate in maintaining the firehouse, continuous fire and emergency medical training, fire prevention work, childhood fire prevention education, fire hydrant maintenance, hose testing and maintenance, and ladder testing and maintenance. In addition, our department fleet of two Advance Cardiac Life Support rescue squads, two fire engines, utility/pickup truck and chiefs car are maintained and vehicle checks and inventories performed. A number of our members serve on special teams including the Hillcrest technical rescue team, the Fire Investigation Unit, Hillcrest Fire Training Officers and Rapid Intervention Team group. A full time member owns and trains our 7 year old Arson Dog, Dakota.
Three full-time Lieutenants have designated commercial facilities for which they are responsible to oversee and ensure, through an annual and ongoing inspection process, that they comply with existing codes. Administrative duties include correspondence, purchasing, records and reporting, legal records processing and day-to-day dealings and requests from the general public. The fire department also provides services such as installation of child car seats, and providing on-site tours for children.
