Rubbish Collection and Recycling

The Pepper Pike Sanitation Division would like to inform / remind residents of our collection and recycling guidelines. The purpose of these guidelines is to make your collection a smooth and easy process while keeping it safe for your sanitation crews.

The following guidelines apply to your weekly rubbish and recycling collection and Friday Special Pick-Ups.


Rubbish and Recycling Collection:
For weekly rubbish collection, place rubbish -

  • In plastic disposal bags
  • Inside galvanized or plastic, 30-gallon or smaller, waste containers
  • For safety reasons, the containers should be equipped with two lifting handles and not weigh more than 40 pounds
  • In same location each week, remove nearby personal belongings to avoid any confusion

For missed rubbish collection -

  • Call the Service Department before 2:30pm on your scheduled collection day for pick-up.
  • If you call the Service Department after 2:30pm, or on other days, rubbish will be picked up on Friday after you schedule a Friday Special Pick-Up.
  • To avoid missing rubbish collection, please have rubbish ready for pick-up by 7am on your scheduled day and keep your driveway clear of vehicles and anything else that may block the truck from entering.

Paper collection for recycling -

  • · Up to two tied bundles or two grocery paper bags of mixed paper will be picked up for recycling along with your weekly rubbish. Please keep bags and bundles separate from the regular rubbish.
    Acceptable Waste Paper - newspaper and magazines • corrugated cardboard • phone books • cereal boxes (liners removed) • junk mail • beer and pop cartons (non foiled) • tissue, food and detergent cartons (with plastic removed) • shoe boxes, cigarette and paper egg cartons • gift and toy boxes • paper gift wrap (no foil) • greeting cards and canceled checks
    Do Not Recycle - frozen food containers • milk cartons • foil and plastic lined products sanitary products • waxed paper • waxed cartons • juice cartons • dishwasher soap cartons • photographs • food spoiled paper
  • We still encourage residents to drop off paper at our paper-recycling bin near the Service Department.

Glass, plastic, and aluminum collection for recycling -

  • Place glass, plastic, and aluminum in clear or blue recycling plastic bags (can be purchased at local grocery stores). Recyclable materials may be mixed together. Please keep bags and bundles separate from the regular rubbish.
  • Aluminum donated to the Aluminum Cans for Burned Children program (ACBC) must be in plastic bags and placed in the bin near the Service Department.

"Sharps" - lancets, hypodermic needles and syringes, scalpel blades, and glass articles that have been broken:
"Sharps" may be collected with the normal weekly rubbish. These items must be placed in a "sharps" container, with the word "SHARPS" written in big block letters on all sides of the container so that it is visible to the sanitation crew. A "sharps" container is a rigid, leak-proof, puncture-resistant container with a tight fitting lid. Common household containers that match this description are: detergent bottles • bleach bottles • 2-liter pop bottles • plastic juice containers • and coffee cans (if lid is securely taped to the can).


Friday Special Pick-Ups:
Call ahead to schedule Friday Special Pick-Ups for -

  • Latex paint - paint must be dried with the lids off the cans and boxed. If you are disposing of large amounts of paint cans, place in boxes weighing less than 40 pounds each. To dry paint you can add an equal amount of cat litter or oil dry. For more information about latex paint Do's and Don'ts, refer to Frequently Asked Questions.
  • Large items - washers, dryers, refrigerators, microwaves, freezers, dehumidifiers, furniture, and other appliances. Appliances containing Freon, i.e. refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifier, must have the chemical properly removed by a certified technician before pick-up. Even if you know that the appliance has already had the Freon drained, if there is no tag or sticker indicating so, we can not collect it. For a list of companies who remove Freon try your phone book, or ask your heating and air conditioning company. The price of this service may very.
  • Leaves, yard waste - use Kraft paper recycling bags found at hardware and garden supply stores. Lawn clippings should be removed by a landscaper or (if not chemically treated) placed in a compost pile.
  • Large boxes, crates - collapse and tie in bundles. Bundles must weigh less than 40 pounds and measure 4 feet or less.
  • Lumber, small trees, hedge trimmings - tie in bundles weighing less than 40 pounds. Bundles should measure less than 4 feet in length and individual branches should not exceed 2 inches in diameter.
  • Carpet, padding - bundle into rolls 4 feet or less and weigh less than 40 pounds. .

Restricted Materials
The Service Department is not permitted to collection the following items with normal rubbish collection or Friday Special Pick-Ups. Please refer to Container Drop-Off Program for additional disposal options.:

  • Earth, rocks, broken concrete, bricks, drywall, tiles, linoleum, logs, railroad ties, large amounts of doors and wood, building materials leftover from do-it-yourself home repair projects or by contractors.   • Oil-based paint and pesticides - refer to Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District for round-up dates of these items
  • Used motor oil - Procare at 30299 Chagrin Blvd. (Lander Circle) will accept used oil for recycling during normal business hours. For more information refer to Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District.
