Snow Removal

The Service Department provides snow removal for all dedicated streets in Pepper Pike. During a snowstorm, there are always five snowplow trucks on the roads. During a major snowstorm, the City mains are priority; otherwise, all streets (mains and sides) are plowed and salted at the same time.

For the 2004-2005 snow season, Pepper Pike will be implementing a new program to further assist with our snow and ice removal and prevention efforts. This new program is referred to as the Salt Brine Application Program. Salt brine is the mixture of regular tap water and road salt – the same road salt that has been used in Pepper Pike for years.

Salt brine will be released from the plow trucks along with dry road salt. This is an effective method of snow and ice removal and prevention for several reasons:

  1. Dry road salt alone is only activated once it has been wetted. By adding salt brine, dry road salt is activated more quickly, and is effective for longer periods of time. This is especially true during cold, dry weather when dry road salt just sits on road surfaces. Adding salt brine during these conditions causes the dry road salt to be active and effectively prevents snow and ice from bonding to road surfaces for up to 48 hours.
  2. Dry road salt by itself can occasionally bounce off the road and onto nearby grass, plants, and trees, sometimes causing damage. On the other hand, salt brine causes the dry road salt to stick to the road surface once it has been released from the truck.
  3. The use of salt brine should decrease the amount of road salt used by 20 – 30% per land mile, which is not only beneficial to the environment, but also more cost effective.

There are a number of communities that have been using salt brine application, such as Brecksville, Brunswick and Euclid, and Chagrin Falls and Lyndhurst are considering it at this time. The Ohio Department of Transportation has also been using salt brine to clear highways and other public roads.

For residents who employ private snowplow contractors to clear their driveway, please make sure that they do not push your snow into the street. Please instruct them to push the snow onto your property.

Reminder: private snowplow contractors must obtain a permit through the City of Pepper Pike Building Department.

We would like to remind you that for your safety, please keep a clear distance of at least 100 feet from the plows at all times. In addition, a parking ban goes into effect on all streets when it snows 2 inches or more.
